The Opportunity

Our client is a US-based healthcare solution company that breaks down barriers to mental well-being. They offer a blend of tech-powered tools, personalized coaching, and therapy, all seamlessly integrated and tailored to individual needs.

As our client's business grew, reaching new and diverse customers became crucial. However, the application wasn't accessible to many potential users, including those with disabilities, creating ethical and legal concerns. This limited market reach and hindered inclusivity.

What We Did

Initiating an accessibility audit, we used the Deque Axe tool to pinpoint areas for enhancement within our application. Armed with a prioritized task list, we delved into each aspect, focusing on maximizing impact to ensure inclusivity for all users.

Screen-Reader Optimization:

We started with adding appropriate labels, also ensuring all inputs were fully interactive with different input methods.

We then addressed contrast and readability issues which enhances the usability of the application for users with conditions like color blindness.

Utilizing semantic HTML tags correctly, such as <a> for links and <button> for buttons, ensures compatibility with assistive technologies and provides clearer navigation cues for users.

We also added 'role' attributes to elements to help clarify their purpose and behavior for assistive technologies. Assigning semantic headings with appropriate 'role' and 'aria-level' attributes aids in document structure comprehension for users of screen readers which was our next step.

Ensuring that all image and icon elements have alternate text or captions was also a priority.

For users to comfortably access the app, we ensured all content was fully visible with upto 400% zoom levels. We also added a 'position' attribute to dropdown elements that allows screen readers to announce the current selection's position within the dropdown list, for instance, Option 1 out of 5.

Text-to-Speech Support:

Harnessing the power of text-to-speech technology, we embarked on a frontend overhaul, embracing semantically correct HTML markup to facilitate intuitive navigation. By structuring content with main and subheadings, we aimed to enhance the browsing experience for text-to-speech users, ensuring effortless interaction with our application.

Right-to-Left (RTL) Language Support:

In our quest for inclusivity, we extended support for RTL languages, such as Arabic and Hebrew. By accommodating diverse linguistic backgrounds and reading directions, we strove to eliminate barriers to access, fostering a truly inclusive digital environment.

Keyboard Navigation Enhancement:

Recognizing the importance of keyboard navigation for users with motor impairments, we prioritized enhancements to ensure seamless interaction. Through meticulous attention to detail, including logical focus orders and intuitive focus targets, we optimized keyboard operability throughout the application, empowering users to navigate effortlessly.

Accessible PDFs:

Rounding off our accessibility journey, we revamped all generated PDFs to align with WCAG and UAAG standards. By optimizing contrast ratios, refining keyboard navigation, and ensuring compatibility with text-to-speech readers, we upheld our commitment to accessibility across all facets of our platform.

The Outcome

Incubyte embraced accessibility as a strategic business driver and prioritized the needs of diverse users:

Visual Impairment: Incubyte opened avenues for intuitive navigation for the visually impaired, greatly impacting the accessibility landscape. This overhaul ensured that every user, regardless of visual acuity, could seamlessly engage with the platform.

Hearing Impairment: Through the addition of comprehensive video transcripts, image alt text, and succinct summaries of audio content, we were able to enrich the interaction of diverse users with the platform.

Physical Disabilities: Enabling robust keyboard navigation functionality, we broke down barriers to interaction for users with physical disabilities, empowering them to engage with our application using a variety of input methods.

Conformance Standards: Achieved WCAG 2.1 A & AA standards for conformance levels.

*WCAG has 3 levels: A, AA, AAA. AA ensures high accessibility for most users, while A addresses some issues and AAA covers the widest range of guidelines.
